Not advice

We explain how spoofed calls and call labels tend to work and describe settings as we found them on the devices we tested. Your carrier, phone model and software version may differ. Where the law comes up, this is general information, not legal advice. For a legal problem, talk to a qualified lawyer. For lost money, contact your bank and the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

What the tool cannot know

The number check reads an area code and the shape of a number. It does not know who owns the number, which carrier serves it, what kind of line it is or whether anyone has reported it. A familiar area code does not show a call is genuine, and an odd one does not show it is fake. Please do not use the output to confront, track or accuse anyone.

Independence

Spoofwatch is an independent site. It is not a carrier, a call-blocking company or a government agency, and none of them endorses it. Names of carriers, agencies and phone makers appear because readers need to be pointed at them, and those organizations have not reviewed anything here.

Labels are estimates

When we describe a label such as Scam Likely or Spam Risk, we describe a rating that a carrier or app assigns by its own method. It is an estimate, not a verdict about who a caller is.

Menus move

Phone makers and carriers rename settings without telling us. If a path here does not match your screen, check the maker's own help page, and tell us through the contact page so we can fix it.

Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information

We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. The site uses no cookies, analytics or advertising scripts. California residents can read their rights in the privacy notice or write to [email protected].

Use what you read with care

Use our pages to understand a situation and pick a next step, then confirm important details with your carrier, your bank or the agency involved. If a call asked you for money, a code or personal information, hanging up and verifying through an official channel is sound advice even when other details on a page differ from your case.
